Quick Template — Polygon Layer

Where Create Polygon Layer asks you to choose a workspace, a name, a coordinate system, and a field list, this tool decides all of that for you. Use it when you need somewhere to draw right now.

• No parameters, no dialog. Clicking the button creates the layer and adds it to the map immediately.
• The layer is created in the project's default geodatabase, named Polygon_Template. If that name is taken, a numeric suffix is appended, so repeated clicks produce Polygon_Template, Polygon_Template_1, and so on rather than failing.
• The coordinate system is taken from the active map. If there is no active map, WGS 84 is used as a fallback.
• Every template layer gets the same three fields: This schema is fixed and cannot be changed from the button. To choose your own fields, use Create Polygon Layer instead.

• If there is no map open, the tool offers to create one. Accept the prompt, and the new map is created before the layer is added.
• Because the name, location, and schema are all decided automatically, these layers suit sketching, tracing, and scratch work. For data that will be delivered, create the layer with a proper name and schema from the start.

1. Open the map you want to draw in, so the template layer picks up its coordinate system.
2. On the KGA Toolbox tab, in the Data Creation group, open the Quick Template menu and click Polygon Layer.
3. If prompted that no map is open, choose to create one.
4. The Polygon_Template layer appears in the Contents pane, ready to edit.
5. Start digitising. Fill in Name, ID, and Note as you go, or later in the attribute table.
