Overlap Check

Parcels must not overlap — an overlap means two records claim the same ground. This check needs no geodatabase topology, so it runs on shapefiles and on data outside a feature dataset.

• Input Features accepts multiple polygon layers. Overlaps are found both within each layer and between the layers supplied.
• Show only the overlap parcels? applies a definition query so the map displays nothing but the overlapping features. This is the practical way to work through the corrections — everything else is hidden.
• Redisplay all parcels clears that filter and restores the full display. Run the tool with only this option checked to undo a previous filtering.
• Unlike Boundary Overlap and Topology Check, this tool creates no persistent topology, so it leaves nothing behind in the geodatabase. The trade-off is that there is no error inspector and no way to mark an overlap as an accepted exception.
• Resolve overlaps before running Parcel Adjacency or Percent Coverage — both give misleading results on overlapping data.

Find and isolate overlaps

1. On the KGA Toolbox tab, in the Geoprocessing group, open the Topology gallery and click Overlap Check.
2. In Input Features, select the parcel layers to check.
3. Check Show only the overlap parcels?.
4. Click Run. The map now shows only the overlapping parcels.
5. Work through them, editing the geometry to remove each overlap.

Restore the full display

1. Open the tool again.
2. Set Input Features to the same layers.
3. Check Redisplay all parcels and leave Show only the overlap parcels? unchecked.
4. Click Run.
