Percent Coverage

Point the tool at a commune boundary and a set of land-use layers, and it reports the percentage of the commune occupied by each — the standard summary line for a land-use or coverage report.

• Input Feature accepts multiple layers. Each is measured independently against the same boundary, so one run produces a coverage figure per layer.
• Input Boundary Feature supplies the denominator — the total area against which coverage is expressed.
• Areas are computed from the layers' geometry, so the input must be in a projected coordinate system. A geographic coordinate system yields areas in square degrees and the resulting percentages will be wrong.
• Coverage is measured per layer, not per feature. If two features within the same input layer overlap each other, the overlapping area is counted twice and the reported percentage can exceed 100%. Run Detect Overlap/Gap first if the input layers may contain self-overlaps.
• For a per-feature percentage rather than a per-layer total, use Feature Percentage.

1. Confirm every layer is in a projected coordinate system.
2. On the KGA Toolbox tab, in the Spatial Analysis group, open the Spatial Analysis menu, point to Coverage Tools, and click Percent Coverage.
3. In Input Feature, select the overlay layers to measure.
4. Set Input Boundary Feature to the boundary that defines the total area.
5. Click Run and read the coverage percentages in the tool messages.

Requires an active KGA Toolbox license. The tool validates the license before running.
