KML Handler

The window handles both directions, so it is the general-purpose KML tool. For importing a boundary with a coordinate preview and a choice of output geometry, use Import KML file instead.

  • The window has two independent halves:

  • For import, Select input browses to the KML or KMZ file, Select output sets where the layer is written, and Output format and Target CRS are set under Configure settings.
  • Target CRS matters on import. KML is always in WGS 84 geographic coordinates — that is fixed by the format. Set Target CRS to the projected system your project works in, or the imported layer arrives in degrees and cannot be measured or used with the metre-based tools.
  • For export, Save as KMZ chooses between KML and KMZ. KMZ is a compressed single file, which is the better choice for sharing; plain KML is uncompressed and human-readable.
  • Exported KML is reprojected to WGS 84 automatically, as the format requires. A projected source layer therefore changes coordinate system on the way out — this is normal, not an error.
  • The Processing Log records what happened. Read it after a run: KML is a loose format and a file can contain geometry types, nested folders, or styling that do not map cleanly onto a feature class, and the log is where those problems are reported.
  • Height is available where KML elevation values need handling.

Target CRS

The coordinate system the imported layer is written in. Set this to your project's projected system.

Height

Handling for KML elevation values.

Run Extraction

Runs the KML/KMZ to GIS layer conversion.

Save as KMZ

Writes a compressed KMZ instead of a plain KML. Export section.

Run Conversion

Runs the GIS layer to KML/KMZ conversion.

Processing Log

The record of what happened during the run.

Import a KML or KMZ file

  1. On the KGA Toolbox tab, in the Data Creation group, open the Quick Template menu and click KML Handler.
  2. In the KML/KMZ to GIS Layer section, click Browse... beside Select input and choose the file.
  3. Set Select output.
  4. Under Configure settings, set Output format and set Target CRS to your project's projected coordinate system.
  5. Click Run Extraction.
  6. Read the Processing Log and check that everything you expected was imported.

Export a layer to KML or KMZ

  1. Open the tool and use the GIS Layer to KML/KMZ section.
  2. Choose the layer to export.
  3. Check Save as KMZ for a single compressed file, or leave it clear for plain KML.
  4. Click Run Conversion, then read the Processing Log.
